In just a few weeks we will gather around our tables and look at the beautiful feast that is spread in front of us. We will have delicious turkey with perfectly crisp skin, buttery mashed potatoes, and pies. We can’t forget the pies! I love the smells of Thanksgiving. For over 30 years I’ve been making my family’s cranberry relish recipe. Even as a child it was my job. I can make this spicy, semi-sweet side dish in my sleep at this point.

One of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving week is making this recipe. You boil the cranberries with spices until the berries burst. The 15 to 20 minutes it takes to get the right consistency of popped berries is amazingly fragrant. In that time my entire home fills with the smell of cranberry, cinnamon, allspice, and clove. It is one of those smells that takes your heart to another place and time.

As much as I’m looking forward to the warm scent of Thanksgiving, I am also looking forward to our Thanksgiving service here at Heritage. This year we will pause our preparations for delicious feasting to join together for a worship service focused on giving thanks. On Wednesday, November 24th at 7:30 pm we will meet in the sanctuary to give praise to God for providing all that we are thankful for. This brief service will give us the opportunity to remain centered in our faith and faithfulness in the midst of holiday festivities and football games.

I am so grateful for each of you, the members and friends, of Heritage Presbyterian Church. You have welcomed me and my family warmly into your community. We are a congregation with full hearts and blessed with the gift of service. It is such a joy to serve God’s beloved people beside each of you and I am thankful for how boldly the Holy Spirit is working in our lives and through our words and deeds. I am looking forward to seeing you Wednesday the 24th and hearing what blessings you are thankful for!

See you then!
